HONOLULU—The top-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team improved to 3-0 with a sweep over Edward Waters, 25-22, 25-7, 25-10 on Friday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors extended their match win-streak over regular season non-conference opponents to 49 dating back to 2013.
It was a historic game as it was Edward Water's first-ever official intercollegiate match.
The Rainbow Warriors overpowered EWU and showed their depth with 15 players entering the match and 12 of those players notching at least one kill. Hawai'i out-hit the Tigers, 35-18 in kills and hit .564 while holding EWU to a -.029 hitting percentage for the game. UH racked up 11 service aces—just two off the program's single game record.
Spyros Chakas and Kāna'i Akana led UH with six kills apiece.
Jakob Thelle kept serving red-hot bombs, posting a match-high five service aces to go with 20 assists in the first two sets alone.
Alaka'i Todd recorded a match-high four blocks and filled his stat line with four kills, three digs and a service ace.
In the first set, the scrappy Tigers kept things close early, trailing by just two points at 11-9. But with Thelle serving, UH went on a 6-to-0 run—which including three aces–to extend their lead to 17-9. UH would score 14 of the last 16 points in the set to take Set 1, 25-11.
Hawai'i rolled to a 2-0 lead, winning Set 2, 25-7. UH scored in bunches, highlighted by a 7-to-0 run with Todd behind the service line. The scoring spurt gave the 'Bows a 15-4 lead and UH pulled away.
In the third set, UH jumped out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 25-10 win to seal the sweep.
Edward Waters was led by Kaelen Ingram who put down a match-high seven kills and Evens Edouard had a pair of blocks.
The Rainbow Warriors will face Edward Waters in a rematch on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 5:00 pm at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
