  NEWS & NOTES

  • The Rainbow Wahine started their conference schedule positively, upending Cal State Fullerton 54-52 at home on Jan. 8. The win marked the first conference-opening win for the 'Bows since 2016, when UH last won the conference tournament. UH was set to begin Big West Conference action on the road but canceled three consecutive games due to widespread COVID-19 issues.
  • Graduate forward Amy Atwell led the 'Bows, scoring 20 points and pulling down 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, and scored the game-winning basket in the final moments. As a result, Atwell was awarded the conference Player of the Week honor for a second time this season.
  • Along with Atwell's effort against the Titans, redshirt sophomore guard Ashley Thoms turned in a stellar home debut, accounting for 11 points, including two made three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Thoms was sidelined during the first half of the season due to NCAA transfer rules.
  • Thursday's matchup at UC San Diego will mark the first time the two programs have ever faced each other. UCSD and CSU Bakersfield are new to the Big West Conference, as the Tritons were a strong team at the NCAA Division II level for many years. UH and UCSD was set to play last season at SimpliFi Arena on Feb. 5th and 6th, but both were canceled.
  • As for Saturday's game, it is one of the longest-running rivalries for UH, holding the upper hand in the series 32-13. The two squads were to play each other twice in 2021 but had one of two canceled while the other went to UCI the on the road, 82-68. The 'Bows have not won at Irvine since 2017.

PURSUIT OF HISTORY
Atwell continues to be the team's top shooting threat at 19.0 points per game. She most recently moved the No. 2 spot of the all-time three-pointers made list surpassing Ashleigh Karaitiana, currently sitting at 154 and is pacing towards the top spot. Megan Tinnin, the all-time leader in made threes, sits at 167. Atwell will need to average one three-pointer a game over the remaining 16 scheduled for the year to break the record. This season, she is also the only student-athlete on the roster who has a chance at 1,000 career points, with 926. To reach the milestone, she needs to average four points per game for the rest of the season.

LOVE THY THREE-BALL
Anyone watching Atwell over her career knows she loves to shoot the three, leading to her pursuit of the made three-pointers record at UH. She has attempted 413 three-pointers going into the weekend, putting her at No. 4 overall with former teammate Julissa Tago at No. 3 with 444, followed by Ashleigh Karaitiana at No. 2 with 448. At Atwell's current pace of 7.0 attempts per game, she will eclipse 500 attempts during her career. The only other player to attempt 500 or more threes at UH is Tinnin with 526. Even more astonishing is her career shooting percentage currently sits at .373, now No. 2 in the UH record book. If her trajectory stays as is, Atwell will be the only student-athlete to finish in the top 3 of career makes attempts and shooting percentage at UH.

NOW THAT'S IMPRESSIVE
Atwell is putting herself in rarefied air as one of the elite players to ever play for the Rainbow Wahine. With her current pace, Atwell will be the first 'Bow to average better than 17 points per game in a single season in over 20 years. After 10 games, Atwell is averaging 19 points per game. In the women's basketball program history, only two players have averaged 19 points or better as a senior. Judy Mosley averaged 25.7 points per game in 1989-90, and Nani Cockett averaged 19.4 in 1997-1998.
