Marquez Shows Out in 0-0 Tie with North Texas

Waipahu-- The University of Hawai'i soccer team started their regular season in one of the most physical battles with visiting North Texas at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium for a 0-0 draw Friday evening.

The Rainbow Wahine (0-0-1) played 110 minutes of aggressive soccer for the program's fifth tie ever to start a season. The Mean Green (2-0-1), a competitor for the Conference USA championship in 2021, pushed and bent the young UH squad but couldn't break them.

The tale of the evening was the impressive play of sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Marquez, as she played her first regulated NCAA Division 1 contest. Marquez tallied seven saves on the night and served as a brick wall against the UNT attack, including the play of the night in the 93rd minute. UNT fired a penalty kick that Marquez saved with jumping punching to her left, keeping the match tied at 0-0.

The 'Bows had their chances to get on the scoreboard throughout the evening but could not crack through the Mean Green defense, tallying three shots but none on goal.

UH will be back in action on Sunday with a 5 p.m. HT kickoff against South Dakota State, following a 6-0 shutout by the Jackrabbits against Idaho State earlier on Friday.
