Rainbow Wahine Drop Contest with South Dakota State, 1-0

Waipahu—The University of Hawai'i soccer team dropped its first match of the season with a 1-0 loss to South Dakota State at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex, Sunday evening.

The Rainbow Wahine (0-1-1) were shut out for the second consecutive match to start the season, a first since 2013 when the Bows were kept scoreless against UNC-Greensboro and the University of Central Florida. The Jackrabbits (4-0) were named Outrigger Soccer Kickoff champions after beating Idaho State and UH.

The match started with controversy as sophomore forward Kelci Sumida took a pass from the top left of the box for a header to beat the goalkeeper. The goal was wiped off with a borderline offsides call, keeping the 'Bows off the scoreboard.

Exactly how they played on Friday, the 'Bows relied on their defense throughout the day, keeping the Jackrabbits in check. Going into the match, SDSU scored six goals against ISU, and in their first three matches, scored three or more goals.

In the 47th minute, SDSU struck for their lone goal as Teani Arakawa beat two defenders to break the stalemate. UH fired off four shots on the night, three from sophomore midfielder Eliza Ammendolia, including three shots on goal.

It'll be a short break for the 'Bows as they'll now hit the road for their first trip away from O'ahu, playing three road matches over six days, stopping at Gonzaga, Washington State, and Idaho. The first of the three will be in Spokane, Washington, on Thursday against the Zags at 7 p.m. PT.
