CSUN Takes Series with Doubleheader Sweep

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – After winning seven of their last eight games, the University of Hawai'i baseball team has now fallen in three straight games after dropping both games of Saturday's doubleheader at CSUN, 12-0 in game one and 4-3 in game two.

Game 1:
CSUN (19-16, 19-16 Big West) took control early and never let up, as sophomore Cade Halemanu allowed six earned runs on eight hits, with two strikeouts.

The Matadors scored three runs in the first and singular runs in the second and third but did the most damage on their way to a 12-0 seven inning win with a seven-run fifth inning.

Redshirt junior Adam Fogel extended his hitting streak to 11 games, but CSUN's starter Gavin Lizik's complete game two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts was the story on the Matador's defensive side. Lizik induced nine ground outs and four flyouts on 104 pitches.

Game 2:
Hawai'i (23-18, 15-16 Big West) again allowed CSUN to score in the first inning, the third straight game in which the Matadors scored in the first frame. The Rainbow Warriors fought back though thanks in part to a 3-run round tripper by freshman Konnor Palmeira in the second inning.

CSUN pulled their starter in the third and Hawai'i didn't score again. The Matadors tied the game in the third inning with a pair of runs and took the lead, which held, in the fourth inning on their way to a 4-3 win.

Freshman Austin Teixeira, in his return to the rotation gave up four hits, four runs and five walks in 3.2 innings pitched before giving way to sophomore Li'i Pontes. Pontes went 4.0 innings without allowing a run and struck out four Matadors.

Senior Logan Pouelsen will start for the Rainbow Warriors on Sunday with first pitch set for 10 a.m. HT.
