HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warrior football team wrapped up its 15-practice spring season with a live scrimmage that pitted the offense versus the defense. Nearly 120 plays were run in three quarters of action on a clear and sunny morning on the UH Lower Campus.
The UH offense scored three touchdowns and converted two field goals, but it was the defense that won the day by forcing four turnovers and frustrating the offense for much of the morning. All in all, head coach
Todd Graham was pleased with the effort on both sides of the ball during the scrimmage and for the entire spring.
"We've had unbelievable spirit of competition and we've developed a lot more of an identity, " Graham said. "Coming off the bowl game we really took a giant step forward and are starting to get an idea of what we want accomplished."
Defensive Highlights
- The defense forced four turnovers with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
- All four turnovers came within the first 20 minutes of game action.
- Cameron Lockridge recorded both interceptions, coming off of Chevan Cordeiro on successive series, including one on a deflection.
- The first-team defense got a key strip and recovery early in the scrimmage as the first-team offense was looking to score its first touchdown of the game.
- After a 20-yard catch, Jonah Panoke was looking to score but Cortez Davis forced a fumble at the 6-yard line that was recovered by Khoury Bethley.
- The UH defense also tallied five sacks with freshman Gabriel Iniguez Jr. getting to the quarterback twice.
Offensive Highlights
- Calvin Turner picked up where he left off from last year with electrifying plays as a receiver and runner.
- Turner had five catches for 46 yards and three carries for 98 yards and a touchdown.
- The senior provided the play of the game with a weaving 75-yard touchdown on an option run.
- Chevan Cordeiro finished 15-of-31 for 148 yards and had six rushes for 27 yards.
- Cordeiro capped his day with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jonah Panoke in the corner of the end zone.
- Grey Ihu provided the highlights on the second-team with two catches of 40-plus yards, including a 47-yard touchdown on a bomb from Jake Farrell.
Following the scrimmage, the Rainbow Warriors were greeted with a special appearance by the UH band and Rainbow Dancers.
With the spring session over, the Rainbow Warriors now look towards their 2021 campaign this fall. UH opens the season at UCLA on August 28 before returning home to host Portland State on September 4.
