HONOLULU — Three double-plays and four two-out hits scoring six runs propelled the University of Hawai'i baseball team to a four-game sweep of the UC Davis Aggies, 9-2. For the Rainbow Warriors (20-14, 12-12 Big West), it was their first Big West series sweep since 2016 sweeping the Aggies (10-28, 5-19 Big West) back on April 8-10.
The win also gave the 'Bows their first conference win in a Sunday game this season.
The 'Bows picked up right where they left off on Saturday and jumped on the Aggies early. After a lead-off walk to shortstop
Kole Kaler, a sacrifice bunt advanced him to second. Down 0-2 with two-outs, first baseman
Alex Baeza grounded on back up the middle and into center field scoring Kaler to give the 'Bows the early 1-0 lead.
For the first four innings, the Aggies scattered three hits but senior
Logan Pouelsen was able to induce two double plays as well as two strikeouts as he faced one over the minimum over that span. Pouelsen, however, ran into some trouble in the fifth.
After a lead-off double, Pouelsen was able to strike out a batter but allowed another hit to have runners on the corners with one-out. The next batter hit a shallow fly ball to the right fielder
Scotty Scott and a strong throw home kept him from tagging up and scoring. With two-outs and a 1-2 count, he dialed up some high heat to strikeout his fourth Aggie of the day and keep them off the board. Immediately after the swing, Pouelsen let out some emotion as he yelled towards the Hawai'i dugout to fire up the team after escaping the jam unscathed.
And he did just that. Fire up the team. Following back-to-back singles from second baseman
Aaron Ujimori and Kaler, Scott moved them over with his second sacrifice bunt on the afternoon. Designated hitter
Dustin Demeter brought home Ujimori on a sacrifice fly then Baeza came through again with his second two-out RBI single on the day. After an Aggie pitching change, a walk and an error loaded the bases for third baseman
Stone Miyao. The freshman lined a pitch into right for his second hit of the day to bring home two more extending the lead to 5-0 and extended his hitting streak to six games in a row.
The Aggies scored one in the top of the sixth after a double, single and sacrifice fly. With a runner on second and two-outs, the Aggies hit a grounder down the line but a diving stop by Baeza, who got up and raced to the bag, prevented them from scoring more. Pouelsen finished the day going a season-high 6.0 innings giving up seven hits and striking out four.
Freshman
Jake Hymel entered the game to start the seventh and gave up back-to-back-to-back singles but induced the third double play of the day, this time a 4-3-6 double play which allowed a run to score. Sophomore
Cameron Hagan, who came into the game with two-outs and a runner on third, got a groundout to end the threat and keep the lead 5-2. Hagan would go on to record the final seven outs, striking out two and giving up no runs.
The 'Bows added four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Miyao led-off the inning with his third hit of the day, this time a double the opposite way down the left-field line. On the day, he finished 3-4 with two RBIs and for the series, was 9-18 with seven RBIs and his first career home run. Catcher
Tyler Murray then came up and drove him home with a single to right center extending the lead to 6-2. After a walk and a throwing error, the 'Bows had the bases loaded with one-out. Another throwing error following a pop-up to the second baseman allowed Murray to score. Baeza came through for the third time with two-outs as he delivered his third and fourth RBIs on the day as he singled to center field and gave the 'Bows a 9-2 lead. Baeza finished the weekend 7-18 with four RBIs
The Rainbow Warriors will be on the road next weekend at Cal State Fullerton. The Titans (17-18, 10-6 Big West) are coming off a series split with CSUN. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. HT on Friday.
