Quandt Grand Slam, Demeter Homer Earn Doubleheader Split

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i bats erupted in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against CSU Bakersfield en route to a doubleheader split. Freshman Jared Quandt hit a grand slam in the second game of the doubleheader becoming the second freshman in program history to hit a grand slam.

Game 1:
After falling behind 1-0 after the first inning, a single from redshirt junior Dustin Demeter came around to score after a hit, ground out and sacrifice fly. That was all the scoring offense the Rainbow Warriors (16-13, 8-11 Big West) could muster against the Roadrunners' Aaron Charles in a 4-1 loss.

The 'Bow's collected six hits in the game but scattered them across the middle innings.

Hawai'i pitchers gave up four runs on 11 hits and tied a season-high seven walks as a staff. Freshman Austin Teixeira finished after 3.0 innings in his start and got a no decision. The loss marked the first game Hawai'i has lost when Teixeira has started all season. Teixeira struck out three, walked four and allowed one run on one hit.

Senior Logan Pouelsen took the loss after 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and one run with a walk and a strikeout.

Game 2:
The bats came alive in the second game. A two-run home run from Demeter in the fifth inning was topped by Quandt's grand slam later in the same inning. Hawai'i used the six RBI on two swings to score seven runs on six hits and win 11-4 – every starter finished the game with at least one base hit, the first time since 2019 at Ohio State.

Quandt's grand slam was the first grand slam by a freshman since Randy Inaba in 1982 against Hawai'i Hilo and the second in program history by a freshman. It was the school's first since 2019 and the second since 2010.

Demeter, in his first starts since March 20 against Long Beach State, had four hits in the second game, a career-high, and four RBI, the most since he had four against Cal State Fullerton in 2018.

Shortstop Kole Kaler (2 hits), left fielder Safea Villaruz-Mauai (2 hits) and second baseman Stone Miyao (2 hits) all joined Quandt (3 hits) and Demeter (4 hits) with multiple hits.

Sophomore Cade Halemanu worked 5.2 innings, scattering 11 hits and four earned runs. The right-handed started struck out a pair and walked one. Redshirt freshman Tyler Dyball worked 3.1 scoreless innings of relief work to earn the save on just three hits, striking out three and did not allow a walk.

The two teams face off in the series finale on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. HT. Hawai'i will look to split the series and CSU Bakersfield (10-8, 7-4 Big West) will look for its second consecutive 4-game series win over the 'Bows.
