HONOLULU—The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's office made their end of the year award announcements on Thursday afternoon, and the University of Hawai'i swimming and diving program was well represented.
For the second consecutive season sophomore,
Daphne Wils was named the MPSF Diver of the Year. Wils showcased her abilities with a limited schedule by winning the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the conference championships in late February. She later won the Zone E 3-meter championship and represented UH at the NCAA championships in mid-March. The 2020-21 campaign marks the ninth straight year a diver from UH has claimed the diver of the year honor on the women's side.
Joining Wils with an end-of-year honor is junior
Max Burman, as he was also named Diver of the Year on the men's side. Burman won the 3-meter event at the MPSF Championships and finished fifth overall in the 1-meter. He later had a strong showing in the Zone E Championships, earning the chance to compete in the NCAA Championships in both the 1 and 3-meter dives. Burman becomes the first-ever diver in the MPSF to achieve both the Freshman of the Year and later Diver of the Year in their career. It's also the seventh time a UH diver has won the award in the last eight years.
For the ninth straight year, head diving coach
Mike Brown and assistant diving coach
Anita Rossing are Co-Diving Coaches of the Year on the women's side, while each were also named Co-Diving Coaches of the Year for the fifth time for the men. UH swept all four possible first-place finishes in the conference championships, and this year was the seventh consecutive year UH had at least one male diver make the NCAA championships. It was also the 17th straight time they had one or more divers at the women's national championships. The duo of Brown and Rossing just completed their 21st season together in O'ahu.
Head coach
Elliot Ptasnik rounds out the awards as he was named the Coach of the Year for the women's team. Ptasnik just completed his second season at the helm of the program and was bestowed the women's Coach of the Year honor last season, as the Rainbow Wahine won the conference championship in each year of Ptansik's tenure. In a untraditional season, Ptasnik and staff kept the program trending upwards, while overcoming obstacles presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, and a limited number of meets.
