Final Homestand For Women’s Tennis, Four Seniors

HONOLULU, O'ahu - The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team is gearing up for its final homestand of the season with a non-conference match against Portland State, Thursday, April 1 and a Big West Conference match against UC Santa Barbara, Saturday, April 3 at the UH Tennis Complex.

Four seniors – Petra Melounova, Nikola Dolakova, Michelle Pits, and Bojana Markovic – will play their final home matches for the Rainbow Wahine (4-3, 3-1 Big West), who began the homestand last week with a pair of wins over UC San Diego and a loss to Cal Poly.

Melounova, a native of Havlíckuv Brod, Czech Republic, will finish her career as the most decorated player in program history. Since joining the program in 2016, she earned Big West Player of the Year three times and was a three-time participant in the NCAA Singles Championships. She became UH's first-ever ITA All-American after advancing to the Round of 16 in 2019. This season, the 2020 Jack Bonham Award recipient has compiled a 3-3 record in singles and doubles primarily playing on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts.

Dolakova, of Vysoke Tatry, Slovakia, has stacked multiple conference and academic awards over her four years with the Rainbow Wahine, making the all-Big West Doubles First Team in 2018 and 2019. So far this season, she has accumulated a 4-1 singles record primarily on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts and a 3-3 doubles record with partner, Satsuki Takamura, on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts.

Pits, of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, saw action early on in the 2021 season at the No. 5 and No. 6 courts. She also played two doubles matches thus far this season with partner, Madison Kim, at the No. 3 court. Last year, she became the third women's tennis player to earn four ITA Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Markovic, who transferred to Hawai'i after playing two seasons at the University of Texas, had a strong 2019 fall season with the 'Bows and became the first Rainbow Wahine to be invited to compete in the ITA Fall Championships in Newport Beach, Calif. The Belgrade, Serbia native appeared in three matches this season, where she notably secured UH's only singles point while facing a nationally ranked USC team.

Portland State enters this week's match-up with a 5-8 overall mark. It will mark the first-ever meeting between the programs. UCSB is 3-3 thus far this season with a two-match win streak. The Gauchos had a strong showing in their most recent match against UC Riverside, winning 6-1. UCSB is led by their No. 1 player Elizaveta Volodka. UH and UCSB last met in 2019 with the Rainbow Wahine winning 4-3 to extend their win steak over the Gauchos to six straight.

Following this week's matches, the Rainbow Wahine will spend the rest of their season on the road in California as they prepare to face multiple Big West opponents UC Davis and Cal State Fullerton, as well as 25th-ranked Stanford. Hawai'i will then finish the regular season with a conference match against UC Riverside.
