Nannen Throws a Gem as Softball Spilts Doubleheader at CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, CALIF.— The University of Hawai'i softball team split Saturday's doubleheader with CSUN taking game one, 12-0, and losing the second game of the day 4-3 at Matador Diamond.

The Rainbow Wahine (4-5, 4-2) took the series from CSUN and remain in the upper half of the Big West Conference standings after taking back-to-back conference series in consecutive weeks. The Matadors (2-4, 2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with the game two victory.

UH will head back to the island of O'ahu and faceoff with UC San Diego for a four-game series, featuring doubleheaders on April 2nd and 3rd at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Game 1

The 'Bows played their most complete game of the season in the first game of the day, tallying season-highs of 16 hits and 12 runs, with all but one batter collecting a hit and five notching multi-hit games.

On top of the 'Bows' essential offensive performance was freshman pitcher Jetta Nannen's steadiness as she recorded the first complete game of her career while holding the Matadors hitless through the first five innings. She ran into problems in the first two innings due to four walks, but once she settled down, the Longmont, Colorado native was nearly unstoppable. She allowed two hits, both in the sixth inning, while striking out two, and kept the Matadors uneasy with nine groundouts and seven flyouts. The win for Nannen was her second of the season.

The game started on a high-note as junior center fielder Brittnee Rossi led off with her first home run of the season. From then on, the 'Bows kept adding to their lead, scoring at least one run in every inning, including six in the top half of the sixth. Rossi contributed to a rarity in softball as she sent a line drive to right field in the top of the third. The right fielder misplayed the ball, resulting in a four-base error erasing what was scored initially as an inside-the-park home run.

The freshman duo of right fielder Maya Nakamura and first baseman Mya'Liah Bethea went 3-for-4 at the plate as both collected two singles and a double. Freshman second baseman Rachel "Bueller" Sabourin had her first breakout game of the season as she went 2-for-4 with a team-high three runs batted in on the game.

Game 2

UH got off to a fast start, scoring a run in the top of the first for an early lead, following Rossi's single, and later a ground out by junior shortstop Nawai Kaupe, scoring Rossi. The advantage marked the third straight game where the 'Bows started a contest with a run in the opening inning.

Junior pitcher Ashley Murphy was building off her stellar performance from game one on Friday, where she threw a complete game, allowing just one run, but the Matadors struck in the second and third frames. After pushing across runs in both innings for a 2-1 lead, the 'Bows answered as Kaupe smashed her third homer of the season, tying the game at 2-2.

After reaching on a fielder's choice, Sabourin scored on the following at-bat as Bethea sent a double down the left-field line, putting UH back on top 3-2.

Murphy and Eryka Gonzales then entered into a pitcher's duel as each put up three straight scoreless innings, leading to the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff double and later a single followed by a double from the Matadors' top half of the lineup paved the way for a walk-off win, scoring two runs in the final frame.
