Softball Splits Doubleheader with Tritons

HONOLULU-- The University of Hawai'i softball team split Friday's doubleheader with UC San Diego, taking game one 6-4 and losing the second of the day 5-1 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Rainbow Wahine (5-6, 5-3) made history with their game one victory as it was the first-ever meeting between the two programs. UC San Diego (6-7, 3-2) kept pace with the 'Bows with their win as both squads sit in the upper half of the Big West Conference standings.

UH, and UCSD will be back in action Saturday night for another doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. HT.

Game 1
The 'Bows' fourth inning was the difference in their 6-4 victory, as they notched five runs on four hits in the frame.

The fourth inning would start and end with freshman second baseman Rachel "Bueller" Sabourin as the 'Bows batted around the order. The inning would be highlighted by a junior center fielder Brittnee Rossi doubling off the wall that scored two runs, followed by senior Angelique "Cheeks" Ramos ground-rule double scoring Rossi. UH added two more in the inning off of the Tritons' defensive miscues, extending their lead to 6-0.

Freshman pitcher Jetta Nannen picked up her second consecutive, complete game. However, the Tritons' two runs in the fourth put them on the board, and a two-run home run in the seventh made things interesting before Nannen would ultimately close the game out.

Nannen worked the ground game getting 10 batters to ground out, and she moved her record to 3-3 on the season. Brittnee Rossi went 2-for-4, and Nawai Kaupe went 0-for-3, but both contributed with a two-RBI game.

Game 2
In-game two, the Tritons struck early with runs in the first and second innings, followed by three runs in the third frame for a 5-0 lead.

UH got off to a slow start, getting shutout for four innings before striking in the fifth off a single by freshman catcher Ka'ena Keliinoi for the only run of the game for the eventual 5-1 final.

Junior pitcher Ashley Murphy gave up five runs on four hits in her three innings of work. Senior Emily Klee took over after and did not give up another run and only one hit in the final four frames.
