KAANAPALI, Maui – The University of Hawai'i women's golfer
Zoey Akagi-Bustin carded a career-low 3-under 69 on the second day of the Ānuenue Spring Break Classic Tuesday at the Royal Kā'anapali Golf Course.
The senior from Wahiawā, O'ahu recorded five birdies on her round and is 1-under 143 for the tournament, two strokes behind leaders Jackie Lucena and Madison Wood of UC Davis heading into Wednesday's final round.
Akagi-Bustin posted birdies at Nos. 1, 5, 6, 8 and 9 for a front nine 32. But her back nine consisted of bogeys at Nos. 10 and 13 and seven pars. She is looking to become UH's second medalist of the tournament, which is now in its eighth year.
As a team, UC Davis is running away with the tournament at 4-over 580. UH is second at 596 after a second round 291. Portland State (602) is third followed by Hawai'i Pacific (701) and Hawai'i Hilo (708).
Junior
Hana Mirnik and freshman
Monica Johnson are both tied for sixth overall at 6-over 150. Mirnik posted four birdies in her round of 73 while Johnson battled back from a rough start and signed for a 75. Freshman
Ali Schmunk improved five strokes from her first round score with a 74 on Tuesday and is in 11
th place at 153.
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine are senior
Sahara Washington (79; 12
th), who is entered as an individual, and sophomore
Kralyn Salazar (80; t-15
th).
The tournament wraps up on Wednesday with tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m.
