GREENSBORO, N.C.—The 2021 season for the University of Hawai'i men's diving team will draw to an end this week as junior
Max Burman and freshman
Zach Lundgren will make their first career appearances at the NCAA Championships beginning on Thursday.
Â
Identical to last week's women's championships, the event will take place at the Greensboro Aquatic Center while featuring the 1-meter on Thursday, 3-meter on Friday, and the platform dive on Saturday.Â
Â
Burman, one of the few veterans between the men's and women's team qualified for the championships last season, placing fourth in the 3-meter and eighth in the 1-meter, will have something to prove. He won the MPSF 3-meter championship a month ago and most recently placed fifth in the event at the Zone E Championships. In both events, Burman's strongest dive was his last dive, performing a forward 2 ½ somersault twist pike, a dive that could propel him on Friday.
Â
Thursday's 1-meter will include a field of 48 participants, and Friday's 3-meter will have 49 for Burman to match up against.Â
Â
Lundgren comes into the field of 41 participants as an unknown and a wild card. Lundgren has only performed on the platform twice this season in competition, the first coming in mid-February with the USC Diving Invitational and the other two weeks ago at the Zone E Championships. Lundgren would have been scheduled to compete in more events featuring the platform in any other year, but due to COVID-19, facilities and events were limited.
Â
As a prep star, Lundgren performed well in the platform, scoring over 500 two years ago in the 16-18 boys event of the Arizona Diving Association Championships.
Â
The duo of Burman and Lundgren continues an ongoing tradition of top divers from UH, as this will mark the seventh straight appearance of at least one Rainbow Warrior diver at the NCAAs.
