SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team closed out their first road trip of the season with a tough loss to San Diego, 7-0, Monday at the Hogan Center.
 
The Rainbow Wahine (1-2) faced strong competition in doubles dropping all three matches. Petra Melounova and Alexis Merrill were tested against USD's Solymar Colling and Elizabeth Goldsmith in a 6-0 defeat. On the No. 3 court, Michelle Pits and Madison Kim fell to Kati Kukaras and Jordyn McBride, 6-1 win, which clinched the doubles point for the Toreros. Satsuki Takamura and Nikola Dolakova fought hard and pushed Maria Tyrina and Abigail Desiatnikov to a 7-6 (7-2) match on the No. 2 court.
 
In singles, the Rainbow Wahine faced further adversity against the Toreros. Melounova held off against 61^st-ranked Colling until falling on the No. 1 court, 7-5, 6-0. Takamura followed, taking on 124^th-ranked Goldsmith on the No. 2 court, 6-2, 6-1. Pitts finished third against Kukaras, 6-3, 6-1, clinching the match for USD.
 
However, UH proved they weren't going down without a fight with Kim playing Victoria Kalaitzis on court No. 5 to a first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (2), 6-2. Dolakova battled it out with Desiatnikov, winning the first set then falling in the third to a tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5). Bojana Markovic tested McBride on the No. 4 court in a three-set match until the former won 6-4, 6-7 (7-3), 1-0 (10-6), closing out the competition.
 
The Rainbow Wahine will return home and in preparation for their second California road trip beginning with Cal State Fullerton Friday, March 19.
