Hawai‘i Off To A Strong Start at the MPSF Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF.—The University of Hawai'i swim and dive team got off to a great start with two top finishes on the opening day of action for the MPSF Championships Tuesday afternoon at the Cal Poly Anderson Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Daphe Wils captured gold in the women's three-meter event for the second consecutive year. At the same time, freshman Mason Williams won the men's one-meter, securing the second first-place finish of his career. Wils and Williams each qualify for the NCAA Zone E event, with both claiming top finishes, taking one step closer to qualifying for the NCAA Championships in March.

Wils tailed a score of 338.25, 40 points north of the second-place finisher, while teammate senior Victoria Moretti helped with the UH point total by coming in at third place.

On the men's side, Williams bested Mickey Stauss of BYU by a narrower margin, 316.50 to 309.40. Matching the same as the women, the 'Bows added to their point total with a second, third-place finish as junior Timothy Netwon rounded out the top three positions.

As a result, UH has a lead in the team standings after the first day and heading into the second day with a full slate of events. In the women's standings, UH leads 68-42 over BYU, and as for the men, the 'Bows also leads BYU there 63-53.

Wednesday will feature relays, including the 200 medley and 800 freestyle, with start times scheduled for after 2 p.m. HT.
