Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hawai‘i comes up short to Gonzaga 69-49

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team dropped their final game of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown 68-49 against Gonzaga Sunday afternoon at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The 'Bows (2-5) struggled to find an offensive rhythm as they scored a season-low 49 points. Gonzaga (6-1) had their third straight double-digit win, taking first place for the weekend.

In the first quarter, the Wahine battled with Gonzaga but gave up a buzzer-beater that put them down 18-16 and switched the momentum. Gonzaga capitalized and started the second quarter on an 8-0 run allowing them to go up 37-24 at the half.

Gonzaga also controlled the second half by outscoring the 'Bows in the final two frames. The Zag's physical difference showed tonight as they dominated the glass and grabbed 37 boards to the 'Bows' 24.

Graduate forward Amy Atwell led the way for UH as she logged her fifth double-digit scoring outing with 16 points. Atwell also tied Ashleigh Karaitiana for second all-time in career threes with 143. Freshman forward Nnenna Orji posted double-figures with 10 points for the third straight game shooting 4-of-4 from the field but a meager 2-of-8 from the charity stripe.

The 'Bows are back in action next Sunday, Dec. 5, as they host LMU. Tipoff is at 5:00 P.M. HT
