Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Atwell drops 24, Calhoun dazzles in win over LMU

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team battled for a 76-63 win over Loyola Marymount University Sunday night inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center

The Rainbow Wahine (3-5) closed out their home non-conference schedule with a second-half outburst from senior forward Amy Atwell, scoring a team-high 24 points. LMU (2-5) close out their island trip against Hawai'i Pacific later this week.

The game was a back and forth battle, with the first half being highlighted by the Lions' ability to rebound the ball. LMU managed to grab 22 boards compared to the Bows 13. A shot with seven seconds left put the Bows down 29-27 at the half.

The 'Bows flipped the script in the second half, where they outrebounded the Lions 21 to 11. UH put together a 7-0 run in the second half and continued to build on it extending their lead to as large as 11 late in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter brought adversity when the Lions started chipping away and overtook the 'Bows' lead. With UH trailing 57-55 with four minutes left, Atwell drained an open three and regained the lead. Sophomore guard Nae Nae Calhoun found a couple of baskets of her own, including a three-pointer to extend the lead to six. Calhoun facilitated the rest of the way as she tacked on four assists in the final two minutes of the win.

Calhoun finished the game with 12 points and six assists. Atwell's stellar night of 24 points and five rebounds marked her sixth consecutive game in double digits and third with 20 or more. Freshman forward Daejah Phillips rounded out the Bows double-digit scorers with 13 points and four boards.

UH will take a two-week break before kickstarting a three-game road trip beginning at UNLV. Tipoff against the Rebels is set for 12:00 p.m. HT.
