NEWS & NOTES
- The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a tough road stretch to start the season, falling at San Diego 86-53, followed by a visit to USC for a 90-50 loss.
- Senior center Kallin Spiller was a bright spot for the 'Bows as she recorded her first career double-double at UH against USC with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
- Turnovers plagued UH throughout the trip as they recorded 27 against the Tritons and 17 to the Women of Troy. Last season, turnovers were an issue, with UH giving up 264 over 17 games for an average of 15.5 per game.
- Along with the turnover struggles, UH was cold from the floor, hitting 32% of their shots, compared to their opponent's average of 51% from the field.
- Newcomers impacted the first two games as Spiller was joined by fellow Ivy League transfer McKenna Haire and freshman power forward Jacque David with eyebrow-raising performances at USC. Haire played 21 minutes off the bench, scoring 11 points and hitting 3-of-6 from long distances. David came off the bench as well, scoring eight points in 19 minutes, including two three-pointers.
WELCOME TO HAWAI'I, OH YOU'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE??
Three teams visiting for the Bank of Hawai'i Classic are Portland, Portland State, and Prairie View A&M. UH, and Prairie View A&M will not battle over the two-day tournament but will go head-to-head with UP and PSU. Historically the Pilots hold the advantage over the 'Bows at 2-4, with their last matchup coming in the same tournament in 2018 going to UP. While the last time UH battled was in 2011, before the start of the
Laura Beeman era.
GLAD YOU'RE HERE
Newcomer
Kallin Spiller is no stranger to being a key player. Before coming to UH, and before transferring to Columbia, she played a season for her hometown school, Seattle University. While playing with the RedHawks, she was named the WAC Freshman of the Year, averaging nine points and six rebounds per game. In 32 games, she started in 27 and recorded six double-doubles.
PURSUIT OF HISTORY
Amy Atwell is the team's leading scorer from last season, averaging 12 points a contest, and is the team's top shooting threat. Atwell has hit 37% from three-point territory and enters the season with 129 made three-point field goals for her career. She ranks fourth all-time in made three-point buckets at UH, 38 behind all-time leader Megan Tinnin. She is all the only athlete on the roster this season who has a chance at 1,000 career points. She is sitting at 751 points, and needs to average a little over nine points a game this season to reach the milestone.
