HONOLULU—The Univeristy of Hawai'i women's tennis team opened its fall season with the Ānuenue Invitational at the UH Tennis Courts on Friday night.
 
There are only two teams in the Ānuenue this season, with HPU coming across town to take on Hawai'i. HPU is dealing with some injuries, so their four active players were all in action, while Hawai'i played both matches against HPU and intrasquad matches as well.
 
In doubles, HPU's Elodie Busson and Valentina Mokrova defeated UH's Tyla Zandberg and Satsuki Takamura, 8-5. Hawai'i's Lexi Merrill and Nidhi Surapaneni doubled up on HPU's Marta Ruszcaynska and Rikona Murakami, 8-4 in the other match against HPU.
 
In singles, Hawai'i won three out of the four matches vs. HPU. Lea Romain rallied from a set down to defeat HPU's Mokrova, 4-6, 7-5,6-1. UH's Madison Kim also won in three sets over HPU's Ruszczynska, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Hawai'i's Jessalyn Lopez dispatched HPU's Murakami in a quick two sets, 6-2, 6-1.
 
The two teams will play again on Saturday morning starting at 10:30 a.m. at the UH Tennis Courts.
