KAPOLEI, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team shot the best round of the day among the five Big West Conference teams participating in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational Monday at the Kapolei Golf Club.
The host Rainbow Wahine carded a first round 10-over 298 and are in third place in the nine-team field. Sixth-ranked Baylor is atop the leaderboard at 4-under 284 followed by Santa Clara (296). Baylor's Britta Snyder shot 3-under 69 and has a one stroke lead over Cal State Fullerton's Elina Saksa (70).
UH's top individual is freshman
Momo Sugiyama, who carded even par 72 with two birdies and two bogeys on her round. The Gold Coast, Australia native is tied for fifth place, one stroke ahead of teammate
Monica Johnson, who shot 1-over 73 and is tied for seventh.
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine are junior
Hana Mirnik (75; t-15
th), freshman Focua Jonglikit (78, t-27
th), and freshman
Hyeonji Kang (81; 44
th).
Three other UH golfers are competing as individuals – freshman
Ting-Yu Liu (77; t-23
rd), sophomore
Kralyn Salazar (78; t-27
th), and freshman
Mayumi Umezu (79; t-31
st).
Round 2 begins on Tuesday with tee times starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Kapolei Golf Club.
