Hawai‘i Competes in Tri-Match with Wisconsin and Arizona

TUCSON, ARIZ.—The University of Hawai'i swim and dive team went head to head with Arizona and Wisconsin Friday afternoon in a tri-meet at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

It was the first test of the 2020-2021 season to measure where the Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine stand against top-level competition. In true UH fashion, both squads showcased they'll be a team to keep an eye on.

UH will be in action tomorrow with the second day of the tri-meet, with eight swimming events and two diving events.

For the Wahine, senior Anna Kotonen turned in the highest finish of the afternoon with a second-place finish in the 50 free, clocking in at 23.47. Kotonen also served with senior Emma Frey, junior Anna Friedrich, and freshman Kathryn Ivanov for a fourth-place finish in the 400 medley relay at 3:45.88.

Both Kotonen and Friedrich were contributors in the 200 free relay later in the day, leading UH to a third-place finish at 1:34.36. Joining them on the relay team were junior Gabrielle Williams and freshman Helena Djunic.

Freshman Kira Hobbs, a Littleton, Colorado native, added with her first collegiate appearance for a third-place finish in the 200 breast with a time 2:19.12.

On the men's side, senior Franz Adam matched Kotonen in the 50 free, placing second overall with a time of 20.52. Earlier in the day, Adam was the anchor on the men's 400 medley relay, placing fourth overall with a time of 3:20.47, alongside senior Ian Venter and the junior combo of Justin Lisoway and Tim Masten.

Senior John Clark turned in a solid performance in the 200 free, placing fourth at 1:40.40.

Diving

UH notched two second-place finishes in the men's three-meter and the women's three-meter. Senior and returning MPSF Diver of the Year Max Burman scored a 370.00, placing just behind the three-meter champion Tazman Abramowicz. Burman will compete again on Saturday in the one-meter championship.

In her debut as a Wahine, freshman Nea Immonen made her presence known in the one-meter with a score of 276.50 for a second-place finish. Immonen, a native of Vantaa, Finland, comes to UH as an accomplished international diver, a familiar description of lately from head coach Mike Brown and associate head Anita Rossing recruits. Two years ago, junior Daphne Wils made her debut from the Netherlands, with an equally impressive showing.
