Takamura Advances To ITA Regionals' Main Draw Round of 32

SAN DIEGO, Calif.--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team began competition on day one of the ITA Southwest Regionals in San Diego, Calif. The Rainbow Wahine fought hard, with many taking their matches to three sets. Two UH players won their first round singles matches to advance to the Round of 64. Only Satsuki Takamura won two matches in the Main Draw to advance to the Round of 32.

The lone Rainbow Wahine to survive in the main draw, Satsuki Takamura, won both her matches on Thursday to punch her ticket into Round of 32. She began things in the Round of 128, where she held off Arizona's Midori Castillo after a lengthy, three-set battle that ended with Takamura dominating the third set tie-breaker to end the match, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (2). Takamura then faced Camille Kiss of UC Santa Barbara in the Round of 64. Takamura took care of business, winning in straight sets via a pair of breaks, 6-4, 7-5. Takamura moves on to the Round of 32 to take on Pepperdine's 6th seeded Taisiya Pachkaleva on Friday, October. 22 at 9:30 a.m. PST.

Hawai'i's Gitte Heynemens also broke through to win her opening match, moving past San Diego State's Alicia Melosch. After splitting the first two sets, Heynemans was able to edge out Melosch in a third set tie-breaker, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (4) to advance to the Round of 64. Heynemens however was then defeated in the secodn round by Selma Ewing of USC, 6-1, 6-4.

The Rainbow Wahine were tenacious on the court, UH's Madison Kim fell in a tight match to CSUN's Ekatarina Repina that ended with a tie-breaker in the third set, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7). UH's Lea Romain also took her match to a third set. She won the second set to even the match, but eventually fell to Loyola Marymount's Veronica Miroshnichenko, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Hawai'i's Alexis Merrill was defeated by UCLA's Alexandra Vagramov, 6-0, 6-2 while UH's Nidhi Surapaneni fell in two sets to UCLA's Elise Wagler, 6-3, 6-2. UH's Tal Talya Zandberg yielded to LMU's Eva Marie Voracek, 6-4, 6-3.

In the doubles competition, the Rainbow Wahine did not fare so well, dropping all three matches. The UH duo of Zandberg and Takamura fell to UC San Diego's Anu Bhadada and Anna Snissarenko, 6-3. Merrill and Surapaneni dropped their match to UCSB's Amelia Honer and Shakhnoza Khatamova, 6-1. UH's Heynemans and Romain lost against SDSU's Alicia Melosch and Nnena Nadozie, 6-2.
