Hawai‘i Swim and Dive Readies for Tri-Meet with Arizona and Wisconsin

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i swim and dive team will embark on its first road trip of the 2021-2022 campaign to kick start the season with a tri-meet against Arizona and Wisconsin, beginning on Friday.

The two-day tri-meet will consist of 16 swimming events, eight events each day, along with the one-meter and three-meter dives.

Friday will also mark the head coaching debut of interim head man Marcus Guttmann. The past five seasons Guttmann served as an assistant, first under Dan Schemmel and most recently Elliot Ptasnik.

Swimming

Both the men's and women's teams are coming off successful seasons, where the Rainbow Wahine claimed their fifth consecutive MPSF Championship. At the same time, the Rainbow Warriors placed second in the conference championships. Both squads had significant contributors graduate but returned some very notable names.

The Wahine squad features Emma Frey, Anna Kotonen, and Jordyn Ryan. During their time at UH, all three have reached moderate success. Along with the three seniors, UH added 10 freshmen to the roster this season.

The Warriors return seniors Franz Adam, John Clark, Talon Lindquist, and juniors Timothy Gallagher, Justin Lisoway, and Tim Masten to bolster their lineup. All six have made a mark individually at UH in prior years, but a big focus will be the relay teams where UH hopes to crack into the NCAA Championships come March.

Joining an experienced group for the Warriors will be a freshmen class of nine. Several newcomers will have an opportunity to stick out in their first collegiate event this weekend, leading to more throughout the year.

Diving

Junior Daphne Wils returns as the two-time MPSF Diver of the Year for the women's team. But she is not entered to compete in the one-meter or three-meter events of the tri-meet. Sophomores Elma Lund and Isabelle Lombardi will lead the way, with freshmen Nea Immonen and Talitha Tarr making their debuts.

Senior Max Burman returns as the men's MPSF Diver of the Year from last season, as he's building on an impressive junior campaign that led him to the NCAA Championships. He'll compete in both events of the tri-meet. Joining Burman in both events will be senior Timmy Newtown and sophomore Mason Williams.
