2010 Softball: Playing at the Women's College World Series

All month long, University of Hawai'i Athletics will feature the 10th anniversary of several memorable moments that occurred during the 2010 season in a #Remember2010 summer series. The 2010 season was highlighted by a national champion in track and field and the softball team's first-ever appearance in the Women's College World Series.

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i softball team is celebrating its 10th Anniversary of its run to the 2010 NCAA Women's College World Series. We will be commemorating the milestone with a series of five videos.

Video #5: Playing in the Women's College World Series
Playing in the NCAA Women's College World Series is the dream of pretty much every little girl who plays softball. In the final video of the series, members of the 2010 team and some family members talk about the experience of playing in Oklahoma City at the formerly named ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

Video #4: The Senior Class
The drive and determination of the 2010 senior class helped to propel the Hawai'i softball team to reach unprecedented heights. Everybody wanted to win together for each other. Katie (Grimes) Profitt, Tasha Pagdilao, Amanda "AJ" Tauali'i, Kanani (Pu'u-Warren) Williams, and Traci Yoshikawa all led in different ways, but always had one goal in mind, getting to the Women's College World Series.

Video #3: Offense + Pitching + Chemistry = THE TEAM
The 2010 Rainbow Wahine softball team was an offensive juggernaut that not only set the NCAA single-season record with 158 home runs, but notched several UH records as well. Add to the mix a phenomenal young pitching staff plus a solid defense. But the key to the team's success was its chemistry. Everyone knew their roles, worked hard and competed everyday to the best of their abilities. This video talks about the offense, the pitching staff and the team itself.

Video #2: Huge Support from Family, Friends, and Fans
The 2010 Rainbow Wahine softball team went further than any other team in program history. Throughout the team's 28-day post-season odyssey, the 'Bows traveled nearly 11,000 miles across the country going from Honolulu-to-Las Cruces, N.M.-to-Stanford, Calif.-to-Tuscaloosa, Ala.-to-Oklahoma City, Okla. Through it all, there was a core group of family, friends, and fans who faithfully followed the team. This video talks about some of the sacrifices the families made to support the players as they advanced in the NCAA tournament. The support given to the team was very much appreciated and the players could feel the aloha from all those in attendance at their games as well as all the way from Hawai'i and across the mainland.

Video #1: Rodriguez Launches UH into Women's College World Series
We will kick off our series with a video celebrating the home run that stunned the softball world. Ten years ago today, on Sunday, May 30, 2010, the No. 16-seed Hawai'i was the David taking on Goliath, the No. 1-seeded Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In the first inning, junior designated player Jenna Rodriguez belted a three-run home run to give the 'Bows an early 3-0 lead in the Super Regional championship game. But after scoring a run in the fourth, the Crimson Tide's Whitney Larsen hit a three-run home run to lift Alabama to a 4-3 lead. UH had found itself down a run, entering the bottom of the seventh with the top of the order coming up for the Rainbow Wahine. Kelly (Majam) Elms led off with a walk, but Alabama pitcher Kelsi Dunne was having herself a game, mowing down the 'Bows with 16 strikeouts in the game--including the first two outs of the seventh. So, UH was down to its final out in front of a loud, packed crowd clad in crimson that was on it's feet. So, with UH down a run with a runner on first, and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Rodriguez stepped to the plate. She ripped the first pitch, driving a shot to leftfield just inside the foul pole to launch Hawai'i to their first ever WCWS in Oklahoma City, Okla. Sophomore pitcher Stephanie Ricketts came in to earn the win in relief of freshman pitcher Kaia Parnaby who had given everything she had through five innings against the potent Crimson Tide offense. With the win, Ricketts improved to 29-8 that season, while Dunne fell to 30-6 overall. The Super Regionals were supposed to have started on Friday, May 28th, but thunderstorms rolled through Tuscaloosa that night, so instead, the teams played a doubleheader on Saturday, and a single game on Sunday. On Saturday, UH split the doubleheader. Alabama shut down the 'Bows, 8-0 in the first game, but UH bounced right back to snap Alabama's 28-game win streak with an 8-7 win to knot the Super Regionals at 1-1 to force the Championship Game on Sunday.
