HONOLULU—The University of Hawaii women's tennis team (4-5, 2-0 Big West) continues its five match homestand this week as they take on Stetson (7-4, 0-0 ASUN Conf) on Wednesday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m. The two teams will face off against each other at the UH Tennis Complex.
Hawaii won its two home matches last week. The Rainbow Wahine defeated Grand Canyon, 6-1 on Thursday. On Saturday, the 'Bows avenged last year's loss to Long Beach State in the BWC Championship match with a 4-3 win over The Beach in their Big West home opener. Against the Lopes of GCU, the 'Bows fell in doubles, but came roaring back to win all six singles matches for a 6-1 win over Grand Canyon. Due to inclement weather, the match against Long Beach State started with singles. The 'Bows clinched the win 4-3 on
Madison Kim's win on the No. 6 court. The two teams played out the doubles matches as UH prevailed with the final score of 4-3. UH remained unbeaten in the Big West at 2-0.
Returning to play at the No. 1 spot last week was senior
Petra Melounova who won both her matches this week. She dominated GCU's Emilia Occhipinti, 6-2, 6-0 and battled back from a set down to defeat LBSU's Natalia Munoz, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. The two wins evened Melounova's overall record at 4-4.
Playing at No. 2,
Satsuki Takamura also won both her singles matches, defeating GCU's Natasha Puehse, in a third set super tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (2). Against LBSU, she edged out her opponent Emma Bardet in a first set tie-breaker before cruising in the second set, 7-6 (4), 6-2. She leads UH with a team-best 6-3 overall record.
Hawai'i's No. 3,
Bojana Markovic's GCU opponent retired after losing 6-0 in the first set. She ended the week with a 6-4, 6-1 win over LBSU's Sadaf Sadeghvaziri on Saturday. Markovic enters this week with a 4-6 overall singles record.
Rookie
Madison Kim, who plays at No. 6, also won both her matches last week. She defeated Grand Canyon's Martina Lo Pumo, 6-3, 6-0. She clinched the match against LBSU with a three set win over Lalita Devarkonda, 7-6 (10), 3-6, 6-2. Kim is tied with Takamura with six singles wins. She has a 6-4 overall record.
