After its spring opening tournament was cancelled last week, the Grand Canyon Invitational will mark the first competition of the spring for the University of Hawai'i women's golf team. The tournament runs Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23 at the GCU Golf Course.
Hosted by Grand Canyon University, the seventh-year tournament will feature a 13-team field, including four previous team champions, Northern Arizona (2014), UC Riverside (2015), North Dakota State (2016), and Portland State (2019). Also participating are California Baptist, CSU Bakersfield, Eastern Washington, Grand Canyon, Hawai'i, Seattle U, Southern Utah, Utah Valley, and UTEP.
Participants will play 54 holes on the 6,110-yard, par-72 course.
UH will be making its second consecutive appearance in the tournament. Two weeks ago, the Rainbow Wahine were scheduled to compete in the Battle at the Rock in Riverside, Calif., however the tournament was cancelled due to high winds.
Junior
Tyra Tonkham leads UH with a 76.0 scoring average and was the team's top finisher at its most recent tournaments, the Rainbow Wahine Invitational and Nanea Pac 12 Preview.
Hawai'i will next host consecutive tournaments – the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, March 10-11 at the Kāne'ohe Klipper Golf Course on O'ahu and the Ānuenue Spring Break Classic, March 23-25 in Kapalua, Maui.
