SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-4, 1-0 Big West) was narrowly defeated by San Diego on Sunday morning at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Complex in San Diego, California. The Toreros improved to 3-3 on the season.
The match began with doubles, with UH's No. 1 duo of Petra Melounova and Nikola Dolokova finishing first and securing the win by defeating USD's Solymar Colling and Helena Francati, 6-3. On the No. 3 court, Madison Kim and Michelle Pits were defeated by Gemma Garcia and Elizabeth Goldsmith, 6-4. The Wahine secured the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead with a hard fought win as Satsuki Takamura and Bojana Markovic held off Daniela Morales and Maria Tyrina, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 2.
Singles proved to be tough for the Rainbow Wahine as the Toreros made a comeback by winning four of the six matches. UH's No. 1 Melounova was defeated by Colling in a three set match, 1-6, 6-0, 6-3. Takamura knocked off Garcia, 6-4, 6-4 playing at No. 2 for the first time this season. Pits won on the No. 4 court in straight sets against Francati, 6-2, 7-5. Goldsmith rallied to defeat Markovic on the No. 3 court, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Tyrina then tied the match at 3-3 by defeated Dolokova 6-, 1-6, 7-5. The Toreros Kati Kukaras then clinched the hard fought match by outlasting Hawai'i's Kim, 7-5, (6-4), 7-5 at No. 6.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their SoCal road trip on Wednesday, February 19th against San Diego State and finish their three match road swing against USC on Friday, February 21st at the Aztec Tennis Complex.
