Womens Tennis Overwhelms UC Irvine in Big West Opener

IRVINE, Calif. -- The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-3, 1-0 Big West) notched their first duel match of the year, defeating UC Irvine in their Big West opener, 6-1. Hawai'i's rookie, No. 6 Lea Romain clinched the match with a straight set win at the UCI Tennis Complex on Saturday morning.

Hawai'i captured the doubles point winning on courts 3 and 1 to start the match. Satsuki Takamura and Romain held off Jenna Schlatter and Arianna Tilbury, 6-4. Nikola Dolakova and Rebecca Ehn secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Jessica Tsukiji and Flora Amiri.

In singles, Hawai'i made quick work of the Anteaters, winning the first five singles matches to attain the victory. Michelle Pits started things off with a 6-1, 6-2 win over UCI's Amiri on the No. 2 court. UH's No. 1 Takamura nearly shut out Stephanie Nguyen, 6-0, 6-1.This was Takamura's first match playing at No. 1 in her young UH career. Romain clinched the match, holding off Schlatter 6-3, 7-5. Madison Kim added to UH's victories with a win against Halla Alajeely 6-0,7-6. Ehn finished fifth with a three set thriller against Alyssia Fossorier 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Finally, Dolakova lost against Tsukiji 6-7, 5-7 in two close sets.

The Rainbow Wahine will go on the road again in two weeks to play against San Diego on February 16th, San Diego State University on February 19th and Southern California on February 21st.
