Satsuki Takamura upset Stanford's 49
th-ranked Janice Shin in straight sets on Thursday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center. Stanford, the two-time defending NCAA champions, remained undefeated at 3-0 while Hawai'i fell to its third-straight ranked opponent to start the year at 0-3.
Stanford, quickly captured the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 court. The Cardinal's 33
rd-ranked, No. 1 duo of Emily Arbuthnott/Angelica Blake defeated UH's
Petra Melounova/
Nikola Dolakova, 6-1, while on the No. 2 court, Michaela Gordon/Janice Shin doubled up on
Bojana Markovic/Takamura, 6-3.
In singles, Stanford rolled winning the first five matches in straight sets. But on the No. 3 court, Takamura held off Shin by a break in the second set to notch the upset victory that ended the match, 6-3, 6-4.
On the No. 1 court, UH's Melounova had an early 3-2 lead in the first set, and again led early in the second set, but Stanford's Arbuthnott pulled away in both for the sweep, 6-3, 6-2.
The Rainbow Wahine will remain on the road in California to open the Big West season facing UC Irvine on Saturday, Fe.b 1 at 7:00 a.m. HT at the UCI Tennis Stadium.
