HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i water polo team faces five different teams at the ASU Cross Conference Challenge in Tempe, Ariz. Jan. 31- Feb. 2. The fourth-ranked Rainbow Wahine look to extend their perfect 3-0 record start against Cal State East Bay, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 24 Azusa Pacific, No. 14 Princeton, and Ottawa-Arizona.
With a strong start to the season, the Wahine are continuing to grind in practice in order to continue their win streak. Redshirt junior Lalelei Mata'afa and sophomore Alba Bonamusa Boix lead the team in scoring with 10 each. Ten 'Bows have netted at least two goals this season.
While the offense has been stellar, defense has proven to be stout as well. Sophomore Bridget Layburn tallied 30 saves in two games in the Rainbow Invite. The team also has holds a total of 37 steals. Sophomore Bernadette Doyle captured five steals with sophomore Szonja Kuna following closely with four.
The team has racked up 58 goals and won every match by 10 points or more while also scoring the most goals in a game since early 2018 with a 22-point game against Marist on Jan. 19.
The first contest of the ASU Cross Conference Challenge begins at 7:30 AM HST on Friday, Jan. 31, in Tempe, Ariz, against Cal State East Bay.
