Box Score HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii water polo team captured the Rainbow Invite title with their final victory over No. 23 Marist, 22-8. The 'Bows recorded 22 goals, the most scored since 23 against Santa Clara on Feb. 1, 2018.
Sophomore,
Alba Bonamusa Boix recorded a career-high of five goals. Redshirt junior,
Lalelei Mata'afa tied a career high of 4 goals and freshman, freshman
Lucia Gomez de la Puenta with 2 goals also tied her season-high for their second time this weekend.
An early turnover by Marist resulted in Bonamusa Boix scoring the first goal to start the game. In a close first frame battle, sophomore,
Szonja Kuna led the Wahine with two goals and two steals.
Bonamusa Boix and Gomez de la Puenta recorded their second goals of the match in the second period. The 'Bows' aggressive defense held the Foxes to only one goal in the second period resulting in a 5-0 run to end the half and a 7-point lead.
The Wahine began the final frame with a 3-0 run while defense controlled the third frame by only allowing two goals. Mata'afa netted her third goal while Kuna and Bonamusa Boix tallied their fourth. Sophomore,
Bernadette Doyle captured her third assist and third steal of the game.
With split duties, juniors goalies,
Danielle Brown tallied four saves while
Molly DiLalla had three.
UH will hit the road to Tempe, Arizona to face five different teams on Jan. 31 - Feb. 2 in the ASU Cross Conference Challenge.
