Rainbow Invite Opens 2020 Season

Bows look to defend Big West title in new year

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i water polo team jumps into the pool to open 2020 on Saturday and Sunday in the Rainbow Invite. The Rainbow Wahine welcome Loyola Marymount, Fresno State and Marist to the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex for the third annual two-day competition.
 
The Bows will host Loyola Marymount and Fresno State on Saturday, and host Marist Sunday morning.
 
Head coach Maureen Cole enters her ninth season at the helm with a head coaching record of 144-76, with her best seasons coming in the past two seasons (21-5 in 2018, 18-6 in 2019).
 
Hawai'i is coming off its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2015 and returns 13 athletes from the 2019 squad, including both goalkeepers, an All-Big West honorable mention selection and two attackers that put up more than 26 goals each.
 
The Wahine return All-Big West honorable mention and freshman team honoree, Emma van Rossum. The sophomore center from Netherlands recorded 37 points as a freshman and helped the goalies allow just 7.42 goals per game.
 
Both goalies recorded over 80 saves in their 2019 campaigns, with sophomore Bridget Layburn recording 102 saves and junior Molly DiLalla recording 82 stops.
 
The pair is joined by Sierra College transfer, Danielle Brown who was a two-time All-American won a CCCAA championship in the 2018-19 season.
 
The top returning scorer for the Wahine, sophomore Alba Bonamusa Boix, returns 27 goals from her 2019 campaign and is followed closely by junior Carmen Baringo who returns 26 goals.
