A pair of former Rainbow Wahine water polo athletes shine at the Pan American Games held in Lima, Peru. Monika Eggens (Canada) and Gabi Mantellato Dias (Brazil) helped guide its respective team country to stellar finishes.
Eggens, a 2013 graduate from UH, proved to be a vital contributor for Canada. The British Columbia native started all six matches including the championship slate. For the tournament, she connected on 13 goals, including four hat trick performances to steer Canada to a runner-up finish and a berth to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
A 2017 graduate of UH, Mantellato Dias helped lead Brazil to a bronze medal finish after defeating Cuba, 8-7 Saturday morning. For the tournament, she found the back of the net eight times, including a hat trick performance victory over Puerto Rico.
The United State of America edged Canada, 24-4, in the championship game, winning its fifth straight Pan American Games title.
