Women's Water Polo

Trio of Rainbow Wahine Compete at 30th Summer Universiade World Games

A trio of University of Hawai'i women's water polo student-athletes are representing their home country at the 30th Summer Universiade World Games held in Napoli, Italy. Sophomore Ann Inoue (Japan) and incoming freshmen Sophie Miliken (Australia) and Szonja Kuna (Hungary) capped off quarterfinal play on Thursday, July 10th.

Going head-to-head in the quarterfinals, Kuna's Hungary team had the upper hand defeating Miliken's Australia squad, 7-4. Kuna registered one assist and had three shots on goal but misfired on all attempts. On the other side of the pool, Milliken found the back of the net for her lone goal of the game.

Representing Japan, Inoue tallied one goal late in the fourth quarter to keep Italy in reach but the late comeback fell short, with Italy defeating Japan, 12-8.

Kuna and Hungary will advance to the semifinals versus the Russian Federation on Friday, July 12.

Meanwhile, Miliken and Inoue's team enter the consolation bracket vying for a fifth-place finish. Miliken and Australia take on China, while Inoue and Japan gear up against the United States, with both matches on Thursday, July 11.
