Baseball Falls to CSUN, 6-3

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - A late-game surge doomed the University of Hawaiʻi baseball team as the 'Bows were handed a 6-3 defeat at CSUN on Sunday in the series finale at Matador Field.

Hawaiʻi (18-22, 7-8 Big West) held a 3-2 lead until the bottom of the seventh inning when CSUN (19-23, 6-9 Big West) took the advantage with a grand slam from Blake Doremus for the go-ahead runs.

The 'Bows finished with 11 hits to CSUN's 9 on the day with Scotty Scott, Alex Baeza, Daylen Calicdan and Tyler Best accounting for two hits apiece.

Hawaiʻi wasted no time getting the offense rolling with a pair of first inning runs. Scott reached on a error then came around to score on another error for a 1-0 lead. Calicdan followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The Matadors chipped away with a single run in the bottom of the third before leveling the scoring at 2-2 on a run in the fifth.

The 'Bows responded with a run in the sixth to retake the edge at 3-2. Dallas Duarte doubled, took third on a single from Best, then scored on Scott's RBI single to center.

The lead lasted until the seventh inning when Doremus' grand slam to put the Matadors up for good at 6-3.

Aaron Davenport started on the bump for UH, going 4.2 innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts. Out of the bullpen, Jeremy Wu-Yelland went 1.2 innings with two runs allowed followed by Calvin Turchin, who faced three batters and allowed two run on two hits. Carter Loewen went the final 1.2 innings without giving up a hit or run for the 'Bows.

Next up for the Rainbow Warriors is a non-conference game at Cal Baptist in Riverside, Calif. on Tuesday, April 30. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. PT (3:00 p.m. HT).
