’Bows Beat Cal Baptist for Trapasso’s 500th Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - A high-scoring first inning helped carry the University of Hawaiʻi baseball team to a 6-2 road win at Cal Baptist on Tuesday night in non-conference action. The win is number 500 in Hawaiʻi head coach Mike Trapasso's career.

Hawaiʻi (19-22) scored five runs in the first and one in the second to sprint out to a 6-0 lead over Cal Baptist (26-18). That was more than enough run support for the pitching staff as Trapasso utilized five different pitchers on the day in the win.

The runs started in the first when Logan Pouelsen walked with the bases loaded followed by Dallas Duarte's single to bring in two more runs. After Tyler Murray was hit by a pitch to load the bases again, Tyler Best walked in a run and Scotty Scott followed with an RBI groundout.

The 'Bows again created havoc on the base paths in the second inning when back-to-back walks then a single loaded the bases for Duarte, who came up with an RBI groundout for a 6-0 edge.

The Lancers managed just one run in the sixth and one in the eighth on the night.

Cal Baptist and Hawaiʻi had seven hits apiece with seven different UH batters picking up hits on the day.

Freshman Li'i Pontes started on the mound, going 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and no runs on three hits.

Out of the bullpen, three-consecutive Bellevue College transfers took the ball and got the job done. Dominic DeMiero pitched 2.0 perfect innings with two strikeouts, followed by Calvin Turchin, who gave up one run on one hit with two strikeouts over the next 1.2 innings. Kash Koltermann went 1.1 innings with two strikeouts while giving up one run on one hit.

Preseason All-American Dylan Thomas dominated in the last 1.2 innings, striking out four of the five batters he faced without giving up a hit or walk.

The Rainbow Warriors have now won five of their last seven games.

Next up, UH heads to Cal Poly for a three-game set scheduled for May 3-5.
