Women's Water Polo

’Bows Look to Take Down No. 4 Cal on Friday

HONOLULU – The fifth-ranked University of Hawaiʻi women's water polo team will play its final non-conference game of the season versus No. 4 Cal on Friday, March 29 at 6:00 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine (13-4) are coming off a 15-2 win over Big West opponent CSUN on March 23 in which freshman Maxine Schaap tied a career high with five goals.

Saturday's showdown is the third between Hawaiʻi and Cal this season. The Golden Bears have gotten the better of the first two meetings by a combined three goals.

In the Feb. 23 game as part of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, the score was tied at 6-6 at the half before the Golden Bears outscored the Rainbow Wahine 4-2 in the third to take the advantage. Cal held on for a 12-10 win. On March 10, Cal sprinted out to a 9-3 lead before a UH comeback pulled the Rainbow Wahine within one goal in a 10-9 loss in Berkeley.

Hawaiʻi holds a 10-32 record in the all-time series with Cal.

UH's high-powered offense is led by All-American Irene Gonzalez, who has 44 goals and 22 assists on the season. Schaap, UH's second-leading scorer, has tallied 35 goals and 22 assists so far in her freshman campaign.

Following the matchup with the Golden Bears, the Rainbow Wahine will head to California to take on UC Irvine on April 5 and Long Beach State on April 7.
