HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball program added another dynamic international standout with the signing of Spyros Chakas of Athens, Greece for the 2021 season.
The 6-foot-4 outside hitter was recruited heavily but ultimately chose the Rainbow Warriors over Pepperdine and Big West Conference rival Long Beach State. He will join countryman Dimitrios Mouchlias, of Soufli, Greece, who is a freshman on this year's squad.
"Spyros is a dynamic athlete and serious student," head coach
Charlie Wade said. "His commitment to being the best he can be as a student and athlete makes him a perfect fit for our program. We are looking forward to having him become part of the Warrior Volleyball 'ohana."
Chakas is the fourth member of the signing class along with setter Austin Buchanan (Moscow, Idaho), outside hitter Mākua Marumoto (Honolulu, O'ahu), and setter Jack Walmer (Manhattan Beach, Calif.)
This past year, Chakas helped his team to a first place finish in the Greek U18 Championships, earning Most Valuable Player and Best Spiker honors. He helped his teams to five regional championships, earning Most Valuable Player honors all five times, including Best Spiker three times and Best Receiver twice.
His teams also competed at the Greek U21 Championships, with a third place finish in 2016-17 and fourth place in 2017-18.
Chakas aspired to major in health/exercise science.
