College Station, Tex.- The University of Hawai'i swimming and diving team wrapped up its stay in Texas with the third and final day of the Art Adamson Invitational on Saturday at Texas A&M.
Throughout the entirety of the event, UH showcased an ability to hang with traditional powerhouse programs in the swimming and diving college ranks, while showing areas of needed growth. The men's and women's teams finished where they started the day. The Rainbow Warriors notched a score of 596 for No. 3 overall, finishing ahead of Stanford, Air Force, and LSU. While the Rainbow Wahine added 137 points to their total, finishing at 412 for No. 4 overall.
UH will have a short break with the Thanksgiving holiday approaching and will leave shortly after to embark on the Toyota U.S. Open Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, Dec. 4-7.
Swimming:
Senior
Phoebe Hines shined once again in the 1650 free, taking first place in the event with a time of 15:56.61. Hines' time ranks No. 1 in the country, surpassing Sophie Cattermole from the University of Louisville. The nation's previous best time from Cattermole was 16:12.35.
The performance of Hines matches up with stellar performances from fellow senior
Olli Kokko and teammate, junior
Kionna Clayton. Kokko's time in the men's 100 breast on the second day of the invitational at 52.23 placing him third overall in the country, and Clayton qualified for the Olympic trials after her effort in the women's 100 breast.
Junior 'aukai Lileikis had an impressive day as well, claiming two new UH records. His time of 43.30 in the B Final of the 100 free set a new standard in the UH record book. Lileikis teamed up with fellow junior
Franz Adam, along with the senior tandem of
David Springhetti and
Mateusz Chaba, for a third-place finish in the 400 free relay. The relay squad set a new school record, with a time of 2:54.48.
Diving:
Senior
Lucas Cooperman turned in another elite performance as he placed third overall in the men's platform dive, scoring a 293.05. Cooperman placed eighth on the second day of the invitational in the one-meter dive. Finishing just shy of Cooperman in the platform was sophomore Tavi Lucero, scoring a 233.05, putting him at No. 6 in the event.
