Game Notes-
• UH comes back to the Stan Sheriff Center for five straight games by hosting the Bank of Hawai'i Classic on Nov. 22 and 24, followed by the Heineken Rainbow Wahine Showdown Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
• So far, the start of the season has favored UH by going 2-1, including a home win against San Diego State, 61-58, and a road win against Pepperdine, 52-51. Compared to last season, this is a role reversal for UH as they started 2018-19 by going 1-7.
• The top contributor for UH has been junior
Lauren Rewers. Last year the 6'4 center averaged 4.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 17.5 minutes per game, accounting for one double-double. In the first three games this season, Rewers is averaging 10.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 28.3 minutes per game, while notching two double-doubles.
•
Julissa Tago has been the go-to shot taker for the 'Bows in the early going, averaging a team-high 13.8 points per game. Tago has battled injuries over the last two seasons, but coming into her senior season, she dropped 25 pounds and is averaging over 25 minutes per game for the first time in her career.
HISTORY LESSON
The 2019-2020 season marks the seventh consecutive season for the Bank of Hawai'i Classic. In the six years prior, the 'Bows have accumulated an overall record of 9-3 and have won the classic three times, and have never been swept.
JUNIORS STEPPING UP
As sophomores
Lauren Rewers and
Jadynn Alexander saw significant playing time, each averaging over 13 minutes a game. Rewers started 21 of 31 games, while Alexander started two of 32. As juniors, the best friend duo are playing even more critical roles. Both have started every game so far, and are averaging over 28 minutes. Alexander leads the team in minutes played at 30.8 playing the role as a defensive stopper, while Rewers has been the go-to threat in the paint at 28.3 minutes a game.
BOMBS AWAY
UH has not been afraid of the three-ball in the early going, pulling for 69 shots in their first three games, including 31 against San Diego State in the season opener. The shooting is there, but they're not falling, yet. The 'Bows are hitting 22% from beyond the arc over the first three games, and the center,
Lauren Rewers, leads the team in three-point percentage at 43%. The top shot taker from long distance has been
Julissa Tago at 30 while hitting for 27 %.
LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE
Head coach
Laura Beeman and the Rainbow Wahine coaching staff announced their 2020 signees on Nov. 13 with five new additions, all coming from the high school ranks.
