Softball Sweeps Doubleheader to Conclude Fall Preseason Classic

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i softball team swept its doubleheader on Sunday to conclude the Fall Preseason Classic. Hawai'i defeated Chaminade, 7-1 in the first game, then blanked Fullerton College in the tourney finale, 5-0.7,

The Silverswords got on the scoreboard first as Malia Ka'akimaka-Moisa hit a solo home run in the top of the second for the early 1-0 lead.

Hawai'i answered in the bottom of the second, tying it at 1-1. Maya Nakamura drilled a triple down the rightfield line and later scored on a groundout to second by Rachel Sabourin.

The Rainbow Wahine took the lead in the fifth. Samantha Thomas singled to right field to start the inning. Thomas hustled to third on a single up the middle by Nawai Kaupe. Thomas then scored on a single by Ka'ena Keliinoi while Kaupe advance all the way to thid. Later with the bases loaded, Nakamura drew a walk to force Kaupe across the plate for a 3-1 lead. 

Hawai'i added four runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 7-1. Merilis "Mama" Rivera walked with the bases for the first run. Nakamura followed with a two-RBI double to the left-center gap. The Rainbow Wahine loaded the bases again and Laakea Bertulfo walked to score Nakamura to cap the scoring.

In the pitching circle, Jetta Nannnen got the start and threw the first 2.1 innings, allowing a run on two hits. Ashley Murphy thew the next 2.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts while allowing three hits and no runs. Cira Bartolotti gave up one hit with two walks while facing four batters as she got one out to end the fifth to earn the win. Emily Klee closed the game, tossing the last two innings with one strikeout. 

For Chaminade, starter Madelyn Stockslager allowed eight runs on seven hits with seven walks and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. Taylor Genera got the final out after issuing two walks to end the sixth.

UH starter Isabella "Izzy" Dino took a perfect game through five-and-a third innings, retiring the first 16-straight batters. Dino earned her second win in the tournament, firing 5.2 innings allowing just one hit with six strikeouts.

Sammie Ofoia notched UH's first hit of the game for either team to start the third inning with a solo home run to centerfield.

In the fourth inning, Callee Heen blasted a solo home run high over the right-centerfield fence.

Heen struck again in the sixth, cranking a three-run home run to centerfield to extend UH's lead to 5-0.

Dino was just the first of four pitchers to throw for UH. Emily Klee got two outs. Dominique Martinez was able to get one out, but gave up a hit, an unsuccessful fielder's choice and a walk in the sixth. Murphy issued a walk to load the bases but ended the game getting the Fullerton batter to hit a pop fly back to the pitcher to end the game.

For the tournament, Brittnee Rossi led UH hitting .571 (4-for-7) with a home run and two runs scored, while Heen hit .500 (4-for-8) with all of her hits going for extra bases--one double and three home runs. She scored four runs while driving in five RBI.
