GAME NOTES
• UH is coming off its most notable victory of the season by knocking off UC Davis, the defending Big West Conference season champions, 65-60 on Jan. 12. The Aggies took a five-point into the fourth quarter, but UH outscored the visiting squad by 10 in the final frame capitalizing at the free throw line, hitting 8-of-8 from the charity stripe in the last three minutes of action.
• Junior forward
Makenna Woodfolk led the Rainbow Wahine with 19 points, but senior point guard
Tia Kanoa turned in a well-rounded game of 15 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
• The victory over UC Davis put an end to two losing streaks for the 'Bows. It snapped a three-game losing skid dating from Dec. 21 to Jan 5. The second was against the Aggies as UH had lost to UC Davis four consecutive times over two years.
• Heading into action on Thursday the series between UH and CSUN is knotted up at 9-9. CSUN ended the 'Bows' season a year ago in the Big West Tournament at 62-57. Before the last game between the two squads, UH took down CSUN two weeks earlier in Northridge, 56-54, ending a five-game losing streak to the Matadors.
• The friendly confines of the Stan Sheriff Center do favor UH at 5-2 overall, but the last home win for UH dates back to Jan. 14, 2016. The win three years ago at the Stan was the most lopsided win in the rivalry at 77-50.
• The Matadors enter play splitting the last six games of their schedule at 3-3. CSUN tipped off the conference schedule on Jan. 5 with a 73-65 home win over UC Santa Barbara but dropped its second game to UC Irvine 65-61 on Jan. 12.
• CSUN is home to one of the most notable players in recent memory of the Big West Conference in senior center Channon Fluker. She is a two-time Big West Player of the Year, a three-time First Team All-Conference selection, as well as a former Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Fluker is currently the No. 3 scorer in the conference with 15.9 points per game, but leads the Big West in rebounds per game(11.0), blocked shots per game (3.6), offensive rebounds per game (4.1), and defensive rebounds per game (6.9).
KANOA CLAIMS BIG WEST WEEKLY HONOR
For the first time in her career, senior point guard
Tia Kanoa was named the Player of the Week by the Big West offices on Jan. 14. Kanoa led the comeback charge of the 'Bows as she flirted with a triple-double finishing with 15 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. The fourth quarter proved to be the turning point for UH and Kanoa as she scored seven points while pulling down three rebounds and dishing out two assists in the final 10 minutes as UH outscored UC Davis by ten for a 65-60 victory.
SLOW START BUT A STRONG FINISH.
From a statistical standpoint, a slow start dooms the 'Bows. This season UH has been outscored in the first quarter by 18 points and in the second quarter by 16 points. When UH is trailing at halftime, its record sits at 0-9, but when UH is leading at the half the record is at 4-1. While the start of the game has been a rough go, the fourth quarter has been a bright spot with UH outscoring its opponents by 11.
SEARCHING FOR A LINEUP
Over the first 15 games UH has used six different starting lineups, including the use of four different lineups over the last four games. The most successful starting five featured Kanoa, senior guard
Leah Salanoa, along with juniors
Makenna Woodfolk,
Julissa Tago, and
Savannah Reier as they went 3-0. The latest lineup is 1-0 while being senior-heavy with Kanoa being joined by both Salanoa sisters, along with juniors Woodfolk and
Courtney Middap.
