HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swimming teams closed the home portion of its schedule on Saturday against Minnesota at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Both squads dropped their head-to-head matchups with Gophers with the men falling 142-120 and the women coming up short at 157-105. But both teams have momentum to build off with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships coming up in late February.
The men's team turned in solid performances in both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay, claiming wins in both events. The 200 team consisted of seniors
Metin Aydin and
Reed Wynn, as well as juniors
Mateusz Chaba and
David Springhetti. The victorious 400 squad consisted of Wynn and Chaba, as well as senior
Maxime Cadiat and sophomore
Franz Adam.
On top of his 200 team victory, Aydin added two other individual wins to his day. The first coming in the 100 backstroke and his second of the afternoon came in the 200 individual medley.
Adding to the day for the men with individual victories was junior Kāne Follows claiming the 200 backstroke and Chaba Mateusz in the 100 butterfly.
As for the women, UH claimed three individual wins on the day. The first coming in the 1000 freestyle as junior
Phoebe Hines claimed her ninth individual win on the season. Joining Hines with a first-place finish were sophomores
Lucia Lassman and
Anna Kotonen. Lassman finished just ahead of senior teammate
Kasey Schmidt in the 100 butterfly, while Kotonen claimed the victory in the 200 individual medley.
UH will now set its sights on training for the MPSF Championships scheduled for Feb 20-22. The diving squad will compete one more time before the conference championships with the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational on Jan 18-20.
