Game Notes
- First meeting between the teams since 2014 in Houston (Rice won 28-14). Teams played six times from 1999-2004 as Western Athletic Conference members with the Owls winning four of those meetings.
- Teams have met three previous times in Honolulu with Rice winning two of three — 1999 (Rice won 38-19), 2001 (Rice won 27-24), and 2003 (UH won 41-21).
- Rice leads the all-time series 5-2 including a current two-game win streak (2004 & '14). UH's two series wins occurred in 2002 (33-28) and '03.
- Rice is coming off a 45-27 home loss to rival Houston last Saturday, a game in which the Owls led 24-17 at the half. The Cougars scored the game's final 28 points after trailing 27-17 midway through the third quarter.
- UH is 2-0 for the second consecutive year after a 59-41 home win over Navy last Saturday. Hawai'i's last 3-0 start occurred in 2007. That team went on to finish with a 12-0 regular season. Since then, three teams, including this year's, have started 2-0 (2009, '17, '18).
- UH has a 31-22 record against current members of Conference USA which includes former conference opponents UTEP (18-13) and Louisiana Tech (8-2).
- Under head coach Nick Rolovich, UH is 5-1 in non-conference home games with its only loss against BYU to close out 2017. The Warriors are 9-1 in their last 10 non-conference home games.
- UH's 102 points through its first two games against Colorado State and Navy is the most to open a season since 2007 (108; 63 vs. No. Colorado, 45 vs. La. Tech). UH's 59 points against Navy last week were the most in a single-game in eight years.
- Under Rolovich, UH is 6-0 when scoring 40+ points. Including his tenure as UH offensive coordinator (2010-11), UH is 17-0 when scoring 40+ points.
- UH quarterback Cole McDonald, the reining Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, has not thrown an interception in 87 career pass attempts including 78 attempts this season.
- UH ranks No. 5 nationally in passing offense (427.0 ypg) while McDonald is No. 2 in total offense (464.0) and No. 3 in passing (423.0). Slot receiver Cedric Byrd is tied for No. 4 in receptions per game (11.0).
- After not scoring on the game's opening drive all of last season, UH has two opening drive touchdowns this season.
