HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team (25-22, 9-11 BWC) never got the bats going against Long Beach State (26-27, 11-9 BWC) on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium, falling in an eight-run shutout to the dirtbags in the second game of the series.
Â
After the 'Bows shut down Long Beach State outright in the first, an error in right field allowed the opening run aboard and a Shaq Robinson RBI triple put the Dirtbags on the board. LBSU tacked up two more in the third inning and broke out to a 3-0 advantage over Hawai'i.
Â
The floodgates opened in the fourth with a pitching change and a three-run inside-the-park home run for Brooks Stotler, with the opening provided when center fielder
Dylan Vchulek crashed into the outfield wall. After the four-run frame,
Jeremy Yelland was able to keep LBSU at bay for the next four innings.
Â
Meanwhile, the Dirtbags also strung together a tough defensive outing behind the pitching efforts of left-handed utility Clayton Andrews, who one-hit the 'Bows through seven innings, striking out seven with three walks. Sebastian Sanchez closed off the final two frames with just two UH hits.
Â
LBSU collected its first run in five innings to grow the lead to its final margin at 8-0 in the top of the ninth off a Jarren Duran RBI single.
Â
Adam Fogel,
Dustin Demeter and
Logan Pouelsen collected hits for the 'Bows.
Â
The Rainbow Warriors and Dirtbags return to action on Sunday afternoon for the series finale and Senior Day at Les Murakami Stadium. Hawai'i will honor the efforts of 12 outgoing seniors following the last home contest of the year. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m.
