IRVINE, Calif. – For the second straight day, the University of Hawai'i women's golf team bested their score from the previous round and finished the Big West Championship in fifth place following Tuesday's final round at Strawberry Farms Golf Club. Following the tournament, the All-Big West awards were handed out and first-year head coach
Stephen Bidne was selected as the league's co-Coach of the Year.
The Rainbow Wahine carded a 296 on Tuesday for a 903 total and were led by freshman
Tyra Tonkham, who fired the low round of the day at 3-under 68 and finished in a tie for third place at 7-over 220. The Arleta, Calif., native shot a back nine 32 – which included five birdies during a six hole stretch – and concluded her final 12 holes in 5-under par. Tonkham's 68 is her low round of the season.
LBSU captured the team title at 879, 10 strokes ahead runner-up UC Davis (889). UC Irvine finished third (897) followed by Cal Poly (902), UH (903), UC Riverside (915), Cal State Fullerton (916), and CSUN (922). LBSU's Jennifer Yu captured medalist honors at even par 213 after a final round 69, three strokes ahead of runner-up Janet Yeo of UC Irvine (216).
UH junior
Kaci Masuda shot a final round 76 and finished in 16
th place at 226. Freshman
Emma Lower tied for 22
nd at 230 after a 75 while sophomore
Megan Ratcliffe concluded with a 77 to tie for 24
th at 231.
Freshman
Sahara Washington completed her first Big West Championship in 37
th place at 241.
Masuda was selected to the all-conference second team while Washington was honorable mention.
The tournament concluded the season for the Rainbow Wahine, who was directed by first-year head coach
Stephen Bidne. UH posted one win and two runner-up finishes and will likely finish the season with a Top 100 national ranking.
