Melounova Knocks Off No. 10 Gordon; Women's Tennis Falls To No. 26 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team fell at No. 26 Stanford, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. But in the loss, UH's Petra Melounova swept 10th-ranked Michaela Gordon, 6-2, 6-3 on the No. 1 singles court.

The Cardinal improved to 8-3 overall  with a 3-0 Pac-12 record, while Hawai'i fell to 6-6 overall. It marked UH's third straight loss and second straight loss to a ranked non-conference team.

Stanford captured the doubles point to start the day winning on courts No. 1 and No. 2.

In singles, the Cardinal, who currently have three ranked players on their roster, won in straight sets in matches 2-6. UH's Melounova was the lone Rainbow Wahine to notch a win. Melounova's win came over the highest-ranked opponent of the sophomore's career. Melounova has had some success when the 'Bows are playing the Cardinal. Last year in the fall as a freshman, she defeated No. 22 Taylor Davidson, 6-3, 7-5 on Maui and in the spring, she was leading No. 51 Caroline Doyle in the third set when the match ended. Last season, Melounova's two biggest wins came at UNLV over 39th-ranked Carol Yang, 6-0, 6-1 and in the NCAA Women's Singles Championships, she knocked off No. 16 Rachel Pierson, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in Athens, Ga. With today's win, Melounova improves to 9-3 overall and 7-3 in dual matches this season.

Hawai'i will remain in California for a pair of Big West Conference matches at Cal Poly on Wednesday, March 28 and at UC Santa Barbara on Friday, March 30.
