SandBows Split On Day 1 Of East Meets West Challenge

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. – The No. 3 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team split a pair of matches on day one of the East Meets West Challenge Saturday at Manhattan Beach Pier. In a tournament pitting the top teams from opposite sides of the country, the Rainbow Wahine swept No. 20 TCU, 5-0, before falling to No. 5 Florida State, 4-1.

On a wet and chilly day in Southern California, the SandBows (5-3) got off to a strong start against the Horned Frogs (3-6). UH left little doubt, winning in straight sets on all five courts, the first time this year UH accomplished the feat. In the process, UH remained undefeated against TCU in four all-time meetings.

The second match of the day against the Seminoles (9-1) was a battle just as expected. Meeting for the first time since last year's dramatic UH win in the NCAA Tournament, Florida State ultimately avenged that loss, though the score was much closer than indicated.

UH's struck first at the No. 2 flight when Emily Maglio and Ka'iwi Schucht  swept Vanessa Freire and Sara Putt, 22-20, 21-13, to put UH up 1-0. The Seminoles, though picked up the next four points, including the match-clinching point on Court 1 when Macy Jerger and Tory Paranagua edged Laurel Weaver and Carly Kan, 26-24, 21-19 in an ultra-competitive match. UH was also close on Court 3 (a 22-20 loss in Set 1) and pushed FSU to the limit on Court 4 before Ari Homayun and Amy Ozee were outlasted in three sets by Katie Horton and Hailey Luke.

The tournament concludes tomorrow with UH facing Florida International (6:00 a.m. HT) and LSU (9:00 a.m. HT).
