SAN DIEGO CALIF.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-1, 0-0 BWC) shook of the rust after a 20-day layoff for a comeback win over San Diego in their first road match of 2018, 4-2. The Toreros swept Hawai'i early to capture the doubles point, but the Rainbow Wahine battled back, capturing four of the first five singles matches for the win.
 
San Diego edged out UH's three tightly contested doubles matches. No. 3 Gemma Garcia and Carolin Nonnenmacher held off UH's Marina Hruba and Alzbeta Houbova by a break, 6-4. Then, on the No. 1 court, Hawai'i's Nikola Dolakova and Klara Prybilova were defeated 7-6 (3) in a tiebreaker by Sophia Chow and Maria-Paula Torres to earn the doubles point. The third doubles match ended at 6-6 and was headed into another tiebreaker on No. 2 Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma fighting hard.  
 
In singles, UH's No. 1 Melounova was leading 6-2, 1-0 when her opponent, Nicole Anderson retired thus tying the match at 1-1. San Diego then went up 2-1 after USD's Morales pulled away from UH's Hruba in straight sets on the No. 2 court. But the Rainbow Wahine then reeled off the next three wins to capture the match at 4-2. No. 3 Dolakova defeated Kati Kukaras in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to tie the match at 2-2. After falling in the first set, No. 4 Pribylova came back to win in three over USD's Garcia, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 and No. 5 Michelle Pits' three set win over Torres, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 sealed the win for UH. On the No. 6 court, Resma was leading over USD's Nonnenmacher in a three-set battle 4-6, 6-1, 3-2, when the match ended.
 
Hawai'i will now head up to Long Beach State to take on the 49ers on Saturday, Feb. 10 before ending their roadtrip at UC Davis on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
